Be Strong
Iâm a scanner. Meaning that when I attend a conference or any professional or work-related gathering of people, I always take a quick inventory of whoâs in the room. Does anyone look like me? Because, thereâs instant discomfort when thereâs no one in the room to give me the knowing ânodâ. Often, Iâm alone, or one of a few in those spaces, but Iâve come to learn that Iâm never really alone. I enter and sit with the ancestors, beside me.
When I enter a room, I take the ancestors with me; I keep Harriet, Ida, Angela, Sojourner, Maya and Lady Kamala close. As a matter of fact, I have their faces printed on post cards in a collage that Iâve taped to a wall in my office; itâs behind my desk, and theyâre positioned in such a way that theyâve always got their eyes on me, watching me while I work, so that when I turn around to seek their support, there they are, every day, keeping a close watch.
