DAY FOURTEEN

Be Strong

I’m a scanner. Meaning that when I attend a conference or any professional or work-related gathering of people, I always take a quick inventory of who’s in the room. Does anyone look like me? Because, there’s instant discomfort when there’s no one in the room to give me the knowing “nod”. Often, I’m alone, or one of a few in those spaces, but I’ve come to learn that I’m never really alone. I enter and sit with the ancestors, beside me.

When I enter a room, I take the ancestors with me; I keep Harriet, Ida, Angela, Sojourner, Maya and Lady Kamala close. As a matter of fact, I have their faces printed on post cards in a collage that I’ve taped to a wall in my office; it’s behind my desk, and they’re positioned in such a way that they’ve always got their eyes on me, watching me while I work, so that when I turn around to seek their support, there they are, every day, keeping a close watch.
